Registration: Stage@Leeds performance explores migration and healthcare professionals in the UK

On 12th July 2025, Registration, a play by Stage@Leeds Young Company, was performed at the Alec Clegg Studio, stage@leeds, Leeds.

The event was attended by over 35 members of the public, including overseas-trained healthcare professionals. Following the performance, Priyasha Saksena, co-investigator of the Making it to the Registers project, shared insight into the project’s origin and motivation.

Registration explores migration, stigma, and the complex issue of who is considered worthy of becoming a healthcare professional in the UK. The play tells the human stories behind the paperwork involved in obtaining license to practise for migrant and refugee nurses and doctors, based on the research findings of the Making it to the Registers project.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Nearly one in five NHS staff members report a non-British nationality. What happens to nurses and doctors who migrate to the UK and the knowledge they carry? What are the challenges they face when they try to obtain recognition of their expertise and qualifications?

Registration by stage@leeds Young Company tells the human stories behind the paperwork. Registration explores migration, stigma, and the complex issue of who is considered worthy of becoming a healthcare professional in the UK.

Can barriers be removed for migrant healthcare professionals, and can we make better use of the talents that come to Britain?

Call For Papers – W. G. Hart Workshop 2025 Regulating the Global Movement of Care

Call For Papers - W. G. Hart Workshop 2025 Regulating the Global Movement of Care

We invite abstracts (of 250-300 words) for the 2025 W G Hart Workshop focusing on the role of law in regulating the global movement of care. Given the historical and contemporary significance of the issue of the movement of carers, we welcome abstracts that explore the legal regulation of care (including comparative and international aspects) through the lens of a variety of disciplines: law, history, anthropology, politics, sociology, criminology, and creative arts.

The Workshop is organised around four themes – precarity, advocacy, protection, and kinship networks (see below) – reflecting the varied facets through which law’s role in regulating the movement of care can be examined. Care is broadly defined and includes healthcare, social care, domestic care, as well as unpaid care. Legal requirements often create precarity by imposing stringent professional regulatory standards on migrant care workers or permitting the claw back of visa fees. Law may also be a tool in the hands of carers and individuals and organisations who support them to battle against exploitation. Legal regulation may, in some instance, offer protection to migrant care workers. Law, in particular immigration requirements, can also define relationships between migrant carers and their broader kinship networks both in their host countries and in the countries that they come from.

Abstracts should be emailed to [email protected] and [email protected] by 5pm on Monday, 6 January 2025. Please also include a brief biography of the speaker in the submission. Further details on the workshop can be found here:  Call for Papers, W G Hart Workshop 2025 Regulating the Global Movement of Care.

Join us for an engaging discussion on the journeys experienced by international doctors and nurses who arrive in Britain, eager to share their expertise. Learn about the process they undergo to gain professional registration, and the challenges they face when trying to register and find work to support our NHS. Carers on the Move features an interactive conversation between the public, practitioners, and researchers bringing together first-hand testimonies from immigrant healthcare workers, a Q&A session, and a historical perspective on the immigration of healthcare professionals in Britain.

The Making it to the Registers project team Marie-Andrée Jacob, Priyasha Saksena, and Amrita Limbu (University of Leeds), and Nasreen Ali, Rukia Saleem, and Britzer Paul Vincent Paul Raj (University of Bedfordshire) are joined by Nelson Enah (nurse), Sun Sander-Jackson (nurse), Dr Rajeev Gupta (doctor & BAPIO representative), and Emma Mathews and Blerta Ilazi (ReSTORE) for the event.

Making it to the Registers, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, explores the historical and contemporary impacts of professional registration on the movement of migrant healthcare professionals in the UK.

Since its creation, our NHS has relied greatly on international staff. But what exactly happens when migrant doctors and nurses come to Britain? Equipped with skills, expertise, and experience, they often still face immense challenges when they try to register, find work, and get valued as professionals in Britain.

Carers on the Move features an interactive talk between the public, practitioners, and researchers to generate awareness around these difficulties and discuss possible solutions.

To support that, the discussion weaves together first-hand testimonies, Q&A, a dip into history, and new research.
